![]() ![]() "Lady Sings the Blues" is the soundtrack for those final, troubled years.Ībout this product: this vinyl LP comes with a CD. Lady Sings the Blues is an album by American jazz vocalist Billie Holiday released in December 1956. In 1959, Holiday would die with 70 cents in her bank account. It was a sellout and despite the limitations with Billie's voice she delivered a superb performance. When the album came out, there was a concert at New York City's Carnegie Hall on 10 November 1956 featuring much of this material along with readings from her autobiography. Beautiful, Smoky, Slow-Burning Piece Of Jazz Vocal History On Vinyl LP Limited To 500 Copies Wax Love present a reissue of Billie Holidays Lady Sings The. The lynching depicted in Strange Fruit is certainly made even more powerful and harrowing by her slow, wrenching delivery. On such cuts as Too Marvelous for Words, the contrast between the lyrics and Holiday's heavy-heartedness is disconcerting, but the juxtaposition works on I Must Have That Man, where Holiday's interpretations seem to be saying that even good love is tragic. These sessions from 19 clearly show the results of a life marked by alcohol and drug abuse, horrific love affairs and racism. First, it is necessary to define what transcendentalism philosophy entails. ![]() From a philosophical approach, it is clear that Melville’s narrative is a reflection of transcendental ideas of the 18th and 19th centuries. Philosophical analysis of “Bartleby the Scrivener”īruce Michelson says “Bartleby the Scrivener” is a sad but funny pursuit of the understanding of “self” and other people… and is a predicament of human sensitive mind as it considers the demands of modern life. For instance, the transcendental ideologies of self-reliance and individual freedom appear to contradict with ethics at the workplace, thereby revealing the philosophical thinking of civil disobedience. However, it is convenient to analyze the story from a philosophical point of view. Many scholars have attempted to use different approaches to determine the cause of Bartleby’s character and its real-life implication, including philosophical, religious and ethical analysis of the character. Throughout the story, Bartleby’s character changes from a polite, cool and firm scrivener to a ‘difficult-to-understand’ person who refuses to take his tasks at the office by using a simple phrase “I would prefer not to” (Wells 38). Written in 1853, Herman Melville’s short story “Bartleby the Scrivener: A story of Wall Street” portrays the character of Bartleby, a “scrivener” hired to work in the narrator’s law office. ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() In these notes, you’ll learn all about how to identify the essential things in your life and what you can do to cut out everything else, thus giving you the mental and emotional fortitude to perform those most vital tasks to the highest standards possible. Instead, we should be focusing on what we should do, thinking instead about what is essential to our happiness and well-being. In fact, we’ll find our closets cluttered with junk we never use and our schedules filled with tasks we can’t complete, at least not well. ![]() Not only that, but having and doing everything won’t necessarily make us happier. We can’t be the expert in every field, we can’t have every toy, nor can we have every possible experience. ![]() More and more recently, it seems like us humans are trying to keep up with technology by trying to do more, have more, produce more, and learn more…īut the problem with this “more more” mentality is, that it’s in direct conflict with the unfortunate fact that we can’t do it all! James’ understated humor is commendable, and what do they say about humor and horror being complimentary? So very true. The last line of this mystery made me laugh out loud, which I don't normally do when reading. I took the story "The Tractate Middoth" and used it as the backbone for a Casting the Runes RPG adventure I ran on Halloween day. "The Rose Garden," while a weak ghost story, is a strong piece of of psychogeography, or perhaps a very strong example of the liminal spaces in-between. ![]() James puts his own twist at the end - after any other writer might have considered the story done - that brings it up a notch. And yet, through it all, we remain “ll too human.”ĭespite the bleakness of the futures, there is much to enjoy and marvel at in the present in the Peripheral. The Gibson of The Peripheral is interested in ideas but he’s also very much interested in big-screen, popcorn-chewing thrills. In Gibson’s portrayal, we are at the tail end of the “oddly optimistic age,” or perhaps at the very beginning of a darker era known as the “deeper jackpot.” It’s a time where climate change has radically altered the social fabric of humanity: vaccines become useless, governments crumble, etc. Without ruining the book, suffice to say that Gibson paints not one, but two compelling, visions for what humanity may become, potentially in our lifetimes. ![]() Or rather, not our future, but something resembling our future. I can’t be certain of his intent, but I would like to believe that, in The Peripheral, William Gibson is sending us a message from our future. ![]() |
